Forgive the intentional puns, but the truth is that the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is OK, that is if you take it seriously and comply.
GDPR is OK for many reasons:
For businesses it provides; a uniform set of rules, PWC recently stated that, “This will impact every entity that holds or uses European personal data both inside and outside of Europe,”.
Organisations that get it right will gain a competitive advantage, in a world full of headlines about; phishing, data breaches, cyber crime and identity theft businesses that comply with GDPR can gain that most important digital currency, ‘trust’.
From a consumer or individuals point of view we have all just about accepted that we have to share some personal information to exist in this digital and data driven world but what we want is to feel that our data is in safe hands. GDPR will force organisations to be responsible and penalise those who are ‘fast and loose’ with our personal information.
GDPR should also ensure that organisations communicate with customers only about issues that are relevant and of interest to them, GDPR won’t necessarily eliminate ‘spam’ but it will enhance the rights individuals have and the punitive nature of the regulation will force businesses to comply.
